Fasting o­n the 10th Muharram is Sunnat. However, instead of fasting o­nly o­n the Day of Aashuraa, the Hadith exhorts that fasting should also be o­n the 9th or o­n the 11th. It was the practice of the Yahood to fast o­n the Day of Aashuraa in commemoration of their freedom from Firaun. Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) ordered that we fast o­n the 9th and 10th or o­n the 10th and 11th to avoid resemblance with the Yahood.
