'ISLAMIC' TELEVISION Question: I read on a billboard in Durban: "Islamic TV to be launched soon in South Africa." Please comment. ANSWER: This is not news. It is old hat. At the time when so-called Islamic radio stations were launched in the name of Islam in South Africa, we predicted that these radio stations are the forerunners for haraam television. The radio station is the stepping stone for this institution of vice and immorality. It was a forgone conclusion that the men of the dunya masquerading as men of the Deen would soon set into motion the process of establishing television "islam". Just as intoxication is a necessary effect of liquor consumption, so too is Shaitaani Television a necessary corollary of Shaitaani Radios.

VOL 16 NO 1: What is Ma'rifat |
Posted by: theMajlis
WHAT IS mA’RIFAT Ma’rifat is a special guidance which Allah Ta’ala inspires into the purified heart of the Mu’min. There are two kinds of Ma’rifat— Istidlaali and Shuhoodi. Istidlaali is the ability to reach Allah Ta’ala by intellectual deduction on the basis of observation of the wonders created by Allah Ta’ala. Contemplation on His creation leads to man’s recognition of Allah Ta’ala. The following Qur’aanic aayat states this type of Ma’rifat: "Soon shall We show them Our signs in the horizons (of the heavens and earth), and in their own beings."

VOL 16 NO 1: Muslim Progress |

MUSLIM PROGRESS Hakimul Ummat Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (rahmatullah alayh) explaining the secret of the success and progress of the early Muslims said: "O Muslims! For progress, study the cause of the progress of Muslims. How did they progress. Don’t look at the progress of the kuffaar. Don’t look at the cause of their progress. Every nation has its own spiritual disposition. The basis of progress of one nation need not be the cause for progress of another nation. What may be beneficial to one people may not be so for others. In fact, even on an individual basis, it does not follow that something which is beneficial for one person will necessarily be beneficial for another person of even the same community.

VOL 16 NO 1: Time and Khiyaanat |
Posted by: theMajlis
Time and Khiyaanat The commission of khiyaanat (abuse of trust) has become a customary practice of many Madrasah Asaarizah (Teachers). The Asaatizah are engaged by the Madrasah to teach at fixed times. Their salary is paid for the time they have to be present at the Madrasah. The time stipulation is among the fundamental constitutuents of the Ijaarah contract which binds both the employer (the Madrasah) and the employees (the Asaatizah). Violation of the terms of the Ijaarah is khiyaanat and unlawful. SIGNIFICANCE Inspite of the importance and sanctity of the contract, many teachers at Madrasah are negligent of their attendance. In many Madaaris some Asaatizah have the habit of arriving late for classes. They arrive late and leave even before the stipulated time for ending classes.

THE UNIVERSITIES YOUR SONS AND DAUGHTERS ATTEND STUDENT DRUNKENNESS AT RHODES (Extract from The Herald 25th Aug. 2004) "Rhodes University Vice-Chancellor Dr.David Woods has warned students against excessive drunken behaviour which could make them vulnerable to crime. Last week over 1000 students marched in protest against what they said were inadequate security and safety measures. The mmarch was sparked by the late-night gang-rape of an 18 year old student the prev ious weekend when she was walking from Rhodes Union on the campus to New Street.……... "As an adult at a university, you need to understand the implications of excessive drinking and other behaviour that is irresponsible," said Dr.Woods. Both campus newspaper Activate’s editor Lesley Odendaal and Student Representative Council president Thamsanqa Moyo yesterday agreed that alcohol consumption by students was a problem. "Rhodes students are known for drinking a lot," said Miss Odendaal. "Drunk students think they are invincible……." Mr.Thamsanqua said student drinking was a problem."

VOL 16 NO 1: Islam, Killings, Barbarity and Justice |

ISLAM, KILLINGS, BARBARITY AND JUSTICE The Purpose of Islam Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) came with the mission of Islam for one single purpose, viz. the salvation of mankind. This purpose was the guiding factor the forgiveness which was granted to the Mushrikeen on the day of the Conquest of Makkah. Inspite of the oppression, persecution and torture which the Mushrikeen of Makkah had perpetrated on the Muslims for 13 years, everything was forgiven and forgotten when Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) and his noble Sahaabah entered Makkah as victors. There was no vengeance, no molestation and no acrimony. There was no need to establish any truth commission or put anyone on trial for the horrendous atrocities which had been committed against the Muslims in the past. Islam came for the everlasting salvation of mankind, hence its Message is directed to all human beings. It is this overriding objective of Islam which precluded the commission of acts of revenge when Makkah was conquered.

VOL 16 NO 1: Jalsahs of the Madaaris |

Some Evils and Corruptions of the Customary Jalsahs of the Madaaris (Hakimul Ummat Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi) The summary of the Shar'i prohibitions on this issue are: Reflection and experience testify that there are two primary reasons for organizing these functions (Jalsahs): (1) Fund-raising (2) Advertising the dignity and status of the Madrasah. The motivation for this is hubb-e-jah (love for fame) and hubb-e-maal (love for wealth). Numerous Nusoos (Qur'aanic verses and Hadith narrations) forbid this. If the fame and wealth are intended for the Deen, there is then no objection. However, the question is: Is the motive the Deen or the dunya? Although Iinterpretation will be presented (by the Madrasah authorities) claiming that these jalsahs are held for the sake of the Deen, it should be understood that Allah Ta'ala has ind icated a standard for every motive. on the basis of this standard can the correctness or corruption of the motive be ascertained.

VOL 16 NO 1: Naseehat of Hadhrat Thanvi |
Posted by: theMajlis
Naseehat of Hadhrat Thanvi (By Hadhrat Maulana Ashraf Ali Thaanvi) 1) Abundance of tilaawat of the Qur'aan Majeed aids in attainment of the goal (Divine Proximity) even if all other auraad (forms of thikr) are discarded. 2) The desire for wealth to fulfil lawful needs is not hubb-e-dunyaa (love of the world). Love for the dunya is to pursue wealth without the concern of the pursuit being haraam or to accumulate wealth unnecessarily. 3) If arrangements cannot be made to obtain female teachers for teaching girls who are close to puberty, then a male in the presence of his wife should teach from behind a screen. 4) The aim of Thikr is to establish a bond with Allah. 5) Carnal lust increases with the consumption of mushtabah (doubtful) things. 6) All spiritual states and conditions have no importance for one who has developed the taste for following the Sunnah. 7) To kiss a picture of Raudha-e-Mubaarak (the Holy Grave of Rasulullah—sallallahu alayhi wasallam) is in conflict with the Sunnah.

VOL 16 NO 1: The Power of Muslims |
Posted by: theMajlis
THE POWER OF MUSLIMS The bedrock of the power of the early Muslims — Sahaabah, Taabieen and Tab-e-Taabieen — was Roohaaniyat or their lofty status of spiritual elevation and divine proximity. The power of the early Ummah, which ushered them to the hilltops of the world never was materialism or economic and military power. on the contrary, they were always inferior in the atter fields. Economically, numerically and militarily, the Sahaabah were always inferior. Despite this inferiority, they became the dominant political power of their times. The bastion of their power is not a secret nor a mystery. THEIR LEADER The Sahaabah had accepted Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) as their leader, and they offered him total obedience in every sphere of their lives. Since they had appointed Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) as their leader, Allah Ta’ala made them the rulers of the earth. In direct opposition to their tareeqah (way), the Muslims of later ages and of the present age, have appointed the western kuffaar as their leaders, hence Allah Ta’ala has appointed them as our rulers.

VOL 16 NO 1: The Spritual Lethargy of the Present day Men of Knowledge |
Posted by: theMajlis
The Spiritual Lethargy of the Present-Day Men of Knowledge A salient characteristic of the majority of the Maulanas and Sheikhs of the present-day is their spiritual lethargy and indifference to the very important and significant acts of ibaadat. The lackadaisical attitude of these learned men in regard to ibaadat is not restricted to Nawaafil (plural of Nafl), but extends to Waajib (compulsory) and Sunnatul Muakkadah (Near compulsory) acts of ibaadat as well.
This deplorable lethargy, in fact indifference, is flagrantly displayed in the matter of Jama’at Salaat. In many places, the Maulanas show scant regard for Jama’at Salaat. They arrive at the Musjid the very last moment, late or absent themselves totally. They seek to justify their lethargy and indifference by the presentation of lame excuses —extremely lame — excuses which are not valid in the Shariah. Due to their indolence and high rate of absenteeism from the Musjid or their lamentable late arrivals after the Salaat has commenced, these learned men lack the moral integrity to give naseehat on the significance, importance and Wujoob of Jama’at Salaat in the Musjid. They know that the musallis will look askance should they deliver bayaans on this subject. They know that the Qur’aanic rebuke : "Why do you say that what you are not practising.", will be hurled at them, hence they cannot muster up the courage to speak on the fadhaail (virtues) of Jama’at Salaat whereas the importance of this ibaadat cannever be exaggerated. Whatever virtues are explained of this vital ibaadat will always be an understatement

VOL 16 NO 1: The Trustees of Deen |
Posted by: theMajlis
THE TRUSTEES OF DEEN Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: "The Ulama are the Trustees of the Deen as long as they do not mingle with the wealthy. When they mingle with the wealthy, then they (the Ulama) are the dacoits of the Deen. Therefore, beware of them." Discussing this Hadith, Hakimul Ummat commented: "Loopholes are extracted generally (by the Ulama) for the wealthy. It is precisely for this reason that the Hadith severely criticizes and reprimands an Aalim who crawls into the company of the wealthy. The effect of such association is inhibition to proclaim the (Haq) of the Masaail (the laws of the Shariah). Since there is the fear of the cessation of monetary and material provisions (which the wealthy present), the Aalim refrains from stating the truth. He does not speak with clarity. Instead, if the wealthy ask about unlawful acts, this Aalim makes these acts permissible by way of interpretation. Indeed, the condition of those Ulama who freely associate with the wealthy (and the rulers), is extremely deplorable. Since greed is generally dominant in people, it constitutes an impediment for the proclamation of the Haqq. In addition to harming the Deen, these Ulama themselves suffer adversely in the world. The very wealthy people with whom they associate begin to despise them. They understand that these Ulama present ‘fatwas’ for their appeasement. Never should the Ulama flatter the wealthy."
